Fight on to get back EMA grant for Lancashire students
4:17pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in News
PUPILS are hoping to use their persuasive powers, and a petition, to get the government to reinstate an education grant.
Education Maintenance Allowance, was scrapped by the government in 2011, but citizenship GCSE pupils from Year 11 at Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads, are launching a campaign to get the grant back.
Emily Gregory, 15, said: “We have created posters and prepared petitions and we are going round school to all the forms to get pupils to sign up.”
They have also prepared a PowerPoint presentation to be shown in form time and will be collecting the petitions in at the end of October and sending them to Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry and the Labour election candidate Will Straw.
Chloe McLaren, 15, said: “The grant allowed people to continue with their education and it could be used towards bus fares or equipment.”
