‘Shameful’ pool closure in Haslingden
3:02pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in News
LABOUR councillors in Haslingden should ‘hang their heads in shame’ after the town’s swimming pool was recommended for closure, one of their Tory counterparts has said.
Coun Annabel Shipley said she felt ‘sad’ for pool users and staff after Rossendale Council officers advised councillors to close the East Bank Avenue baths.
A final decision will be made at a full council meeting next Wednesday.
Coun Shipley, who had campaigned to keep the venue open, said: “It’s not come as a bombshell to be honest, it’s what we were expecting – the council never had any intention of keeping the pool open.
“I’m especially sad for the older pool users because for them this was a community hub. Unfortunately now I can see it becoming a property development within a few years.
“It’s a sad time for Haslingden. If I was a Labour councillor there I would hang my head in shame.
“I don’t blame Rossendale Leisure Trust. They depend on the council for funding and they were stuck between a rock and a hard place.”
