PLANS to demolish part of Bacup’s old market hall have been submitted to Rossendale Council.

Mr J Jones has asked for permission to knock down a single-storey warehouse at the west side of the main Bank Street building.

The old market hall was built in 1867 but became redundant in 1972 following the opening of the market near St James’ Square.

It became Grade II listed in November 1984, but has not been used for the past 15 years.

A statement made to the council by Crosby Chartered Surveyors said: “The main aim of the demolition is two-fold. Firstly to prevent further deterioration and loss of the heritage asset and secondly to enable its long term conservation and re-use.”
