MP welcomes plan for Darwen athletics field
11:27am Monday 9th September 2013 in News
DARWEN MP Jake Berry has welcomed the council’s decision to transform a former school field into an athletics facility.
Mr Berry recently wrote to Education Secretary Michael Gove for advice on how to change the site at the former Darwen Moorland High from a school to a running track with football pitches and a rugby pitch.
But after it was discovered the ‘square meadow’ was not part of the school site, Blackburn with Darwen Council leader Kate Hollern met with campaigner Harry Blackwell to discuss setting up a committee to be responsible for the future of the site.
It is hoped the site will be used as a football pitch, rugby pitch and running track to be used by local sports clubs in the town.
Mr Berry said: “I am really pleased the Square Meadow will be saved and kept for community use.
“This land was gifted by the Methodists to the people of Darwen so it is they who should get to use it going forward.”
