SHHHHH, quiet please! Don’t mind the readers, the library singers are in session!

A group of 17 singers took part in the ‘Lancashire in Harmony’ event in Burnley Library on Thursday morning.

The choir took up residence in the Grimshaw Street library’s music section and performed spiritual and gospel songs from around the world, starting with Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.

Libraries may not be the most likely venue for a vocal concert, but book-worms were not distracted by the songsters, with many stopping their book browsing to join in with the sing song.

Mary Brown, district manager for Burnley libraries said: “The event was wonderful and all the singers were very good.

“They warmed up with professional voice exercises and were in fine voice for the performance.

“Everyone passing by had a big smile on their face. Some were giving the thumbs up or clapping along and some even stopped to join in with the songs.”

The singing session was part of the Up For Arts Project, a joint project between Lancashire County Council and BBC Lancashire which encourages people to try something creative.

The Lancashire in Harmony programme will see singing sessions take place across Lancashire in a variety of venues, including Colne Library on Wednesday, Helmshore Textile Museum on September 22, Clitheroe Library on September 27 and Oswaldtwistle Library on October 1.

Suitable for everyone, the sessions will be led by professional singing tutors and choirs from across Lancashire.
