Tributes to former Rossendale mayor
8:00am Sunday 8th September 2013 in News
TRIBUTES have been paid to a former mayor of Rossendale who has died at her home in Spain.
Joyce Pawson served as Valley's first citizen from May 2007 to May 2008.
She emigrated with her husband Stuart and sister Ida after her mayoral year and was previously a Helmshore councillor.
The flag on the council's flagpole in St Mary’s Gardens, Rawtenstall, will fly at half-mast on Monday.
Coun Anne Cartner Cheetham, who worked alongside Mrs Pawson for many years, said: “Mrs Pawson was always very charming and very nice.
“She really had a very lovely smile that would light up her whole face. She was a very attractive mayor and a calm and practical type of person. I liked her very much.
“I first met her when my husband became ill and was treated in Burnley General Hospital, where Mrs Pawson worked as a medical secretary.
“She was always so kind and really kept my spirits up during that difficult and long time while my husband was ill. She was very experienced in her role and I was very glad of her presence.
“I’m sure she will be sadly missed by all those who knew her, both in Rossendale and in her new home in Spain, where I believe her to have been very happy with her husband and sister.”
A spokeswoman for Rossendale council said: “We will be lowering the flag as a mark of respect and a silence will be observed at the start to the council meeting on Wednesday September 25.”
Anyone wishing to send letters or cards expressing their sympathy to Mrs Pawson’s family, should send them to the Mayor’s Office, Rossendale Borough Council, The Business Centre, Futures Park, Bacup.
