Councillors in Burnley clash over payments
2:39pm Wednesday 4th September 2013 in News
COUNCILLORS have clashed over payments fund designed to help Burnley tenants meet their rents.
Borough leaders were allocated £150,000 for discretionary housing payments for 2013-14 and councillors heard £54,000 had been dished out to 179 households. Tory councillor Mathew Isherwood questioned whether the payments represented temporary assistance.
But Labour councillor Marcus Johnstone said demand for payments had soared because of the Coalition’s ‘bedroom tax’.
“This is one effect of one of the most unpleasant pieces of legislation from one of the most unpleasant administrations in a long time,” he added.
