Mum to tackle Great North Run in aid of Rossendale Hospice
A NURSE and her 22-year-old son are attempting the Great North Run in memory of her sister who died of cancer aged 27.
The family team are among 17 people attempting the half marathon for Rossendale Hospice, where nurse Vicki Frost works, and her sister Wendy Beard was treated.
Vicki said: “Wendy was supported by the hospice – staff would sit with her through the night nearing the end of her life.
“I love working in my local community, meeting people I know through work when I’m out and about.
“I have done two Manchester 10k runs with my son Nathan, who is a lot fitter and faster than I am!
“I am looking forward to completing the Great North Run as I’ve told all my patients I’m doing it and they’ll be watching for me on the TV.”
The hospice is celebrating its 25th anniversary and staff hope the 13.1 mile run will help boost their funds and allow them to keep caring for those who have a life limiting illness.
Gill Simpson is running her third Great North Run for the hospice, who treated her sister Louise Stansfield who died of cancer aged 38.
Gill, 50, who runs Cloughfold Conservative Club, said: “The hospice helped my sister by providing items so she could have her final days at home, which meant a lot.
“My times have got better every year. I broke two hours last year, so now I want to improve it again."
Former Lancashire Telegraph sports reporter Dany Robson is also running to raise money for the hospice.
Dany’s mum died of breast cancer in 2005. She said: “Although my mum didn’t use a hospice, I appreciate the work they do to help others during a tough time.”
Medical student Carrie Kiernan worked on a placement at the hospice, which inspired her to run for the charity.
Hospice spokeswoman, Sam Morris, said: “We are really proud of all our runners. We are grateful for their wonderful support and wish them well on the day.”
