Cuts to Ribble Valley bus service described as 'idiotic' by councillors
3:46pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in News
PROPOSED cuts to a rural bus service have been slammed by borough councillors as ‘idiotic’.
Discussions are under way at Lancashire County Council over cutting the number ten service, which runs from Clitheroe to Slaidburn, from running six days a week down to two.
Coun Ged Mirfin, who represents Billington and Old Langho on Ribble Valley Council, said: “A rural bus service like this one is of vital importance to the economy in the Ribble Valley.
“Tourists use this bus and many others to get from Clitheroe to smaller villages and those settlements receive a significant amount of revenue.
“Without a regular bus service these communities stand to lose out on a huge amount of trade.”
Coun Kevin Horkin, who represents the St Mary’s ward, said: “The countryside is the playground of the urban population and to deprive them of access would be hugely damaging to the local economy.”
