Bursary help for East Lancashire students
YOUNG people will be paid a weekly bursary to enhance their English and maths under a new scheme.
Training provider North Lancs Training Group is known for providing apprenticeships, but is now set to launch tailor-made English, maths and IT courses.
The Accrington-based group is offering teenagers a £40 weekly bursary, paid travel expenses and free breakfast and lunch.
The scheme, which is to be rolled out across the group’s Lancashire sites, aims to help students aged 16 to 18, who are not yet ready to enter an apprenticeship, employment or further education.
Chris Lovell, study programme manager at NLTG, said: “It’s for all young people who are unsure of what their next step is going to be. One thing we must make clear is that these courses are not soft options for English and maths.
“Employers are saying that people are leaving school with skills not fit for purpose and the point is to give enhanced learning in these areas. Sometimes people come out of the education system and it just may not have worked for them. What we are saying is we have opportunities here that can really help.”
The programme begins with an assessment period where students decide which is the best route for them. They will then have the opportunity to achieve qualifications from City and Guilds in functional skills: Maths, English and ICT as well as employability and personal development certificates and a range of vocational qualifications.
Following the study programme, students can use NLTG’s state-of-the-art centre to gain skills and qualifications in their Vocational Centre of Excellence.
Choices include students enrolling on hairdressing, catering and manufacturing courses that will allow them to take the first step towards their chosen career.
Once NLTG have established that the student is ‘work ready’, they will use one of their 3000 plus companies to place the student either to try out a particular trade or to provide an employment opportunity through work experience.
