Two injured in mass street fight in Whitworth
A STREET fight involving a crowd of people left two men needing hospital treatment.
The brawl, which an eyewitness said had between 20 and 40 people involved, left one man with a black eye and another with a suspected broken jaw.
The incident, which happened outside Whitworth Working Men's Club during a wedding reception, was attended by police and two ambulances.
The two injured men were treated by paramedics in Market Street.
They were later taken to Fairfield Hospital in Bury.
An eyewitness to the incident, who did not wish to be named, said: “There were about 20 or 40 people out in the street during the wedding. I’m not sure if they were all fighting or if some of them were just trying to stop a couple of men from hitting each other.
“These things get this way when people have too much to drink at weddings.
“Tempers flare and one thing leads to another and before you know it people are taking chunks out of each other.
“Other people get involved to try and sort it out and can get pulled into the fight themselves.”
Inspector John Fryer, of Rossendale Police, said: “Officers were called to a punch up in Market Street during a wedding at around 9.45pm on Friday.
Nobody was fighting when we got there, but we believe between 20 and 40 people were involved.”
