Ribble Valley Conservatives welcome forced marriage block
4:57pm Tuesday 13th August 2013 in News
CONSERVATIVES in the Ribble Valley have voiced their support after the government announced that forced marriage will become an offence.
They have also joined calls to warn teachers, doctors and airport staff to be alert to the problem over the school holidays.
Ribble Valley councillor, Ken Hind, has said that children must be taught at school to be aware ‘that the choice of whom we marry in our liberal democratic society is a fundamental human right’.
Coun Hind, who represents Dilworth and Longridge, said: “Anyone sitting in our courts in East Lancashire and seeing cases of kidnapping and violence against young girls in this situation will realise that this is a big problem locally. Our children must be taught, if necessary at school, to be aware that the choice of whom we marry is a fundamental human right of the individual.
“Parents and family have no right to force their children into marriage against their will.
“This is particularly a problem with girls aged 16 and over and results in problems which can cause divisions within families that last a lifetime.”
