Parade set to launch Darwen's annual gala day
2:50pm Tuesday 13th August 2013 in News
THE 48th annual Darwen Gala gets under way at 1.45pm this Saturday.
Almost half a century of tradition will continue with the event on the playing fields between Belgrave Road and Borough Road.
Entertaining the crowds on the gala field will be the Accrington Pipe Band, Cheer Valley Cheerleaders and the Cuerden Birds of Prey. There will also be the usual array of stalls with a number of local businesses and charities involved, such as Moggies Cat Rescue, Darwen Days and the Friends of Darwen Cemetery. The gala will be preceded by the annual gala parade, which will leave Anchor Road at 12.30pm.
A rolling roadblock will allow the parade to head along the A666, hitting the town centre at 1pm and reaching the gala field at 1.20pm.
The event will be opened by mayor of Darwen Town Council Eileen Entwistle and the mayor and mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen, Salim and Sayeeda Mulla.
The latest round of grants from the Crown Paints and Darwen Town Council Community Awards will also be handed out on the main stage.
