Blackburn housing chief challenged over £500 licences for landlords
12:00pm Tuesday 13th August 2013 in News
BLACKBURN with Darwen housing boss Yusuf Jan-Virmani has been asked to justify charging landlords £500 for a licence to let properties in parts of the borough.
Habib Adam believes that with the current schemes set to run out in February 2014, charging the full fee permitted under the legislation is unfair.
The authority currently licenses landlords in the Infirmary and Mill Hill districts of Blackburn and parts of Darwen.
Mr Adam, of London Road, Blackburn, was due to raise the issue in person at last week’s borough executive board but was unable to attend.
In his written question submitted to the senior councillors he said there were just seven months left to run of the current selective licensing scheme in the Infirmary area adding: “Surely a pro-rata charge should be made for the remaining months.”
He also question the council’s policy on electrical safety certificates, Coun Jan-Virmani is to reply in writing to Mr Adam.
