Burnley lecturer in running for Euro seat
6:00pm Monday 12th August 2013 in News
A LECTURER and councillor from Burnley will form part of Labour’s campaign for next year’s Euro elections.
Coun Wajid Khan, below, who represents the Daneshouse and Stoneyholme ward, was ranked fifth in the party’s MEP pecking order.
MEP Arlene McCarthy is standing again and will be joined by Merseysider Theresa Griffin, former Manchester Lord Mayor Afzal Khan and Julie Ward.
But Coun Khan, who lectures on European affairs and citizenship at UCLan’s Burnley campus, may be facing an uphill struggle.
The last election saw three Tories, two Labour, one Liberal Democrat, one UKIP and one BNP MEP selected across the region.
If eventually successful he would join Simonstone-based Conservative Sajjad Karim in the European Parliament.
