£300,000 moved to help fund new Witton Park athletics track

BOROUGH resources boss Andy Kay has won approval to transfer £300,000 from the budget earmarked for replacing the cladding on Blackburn Central Library to building a new athletics stadium in Witton Park.
He told Blackburn with Darwen council’s executive board the tender for the work on the Northgate building came in £1million below the original £2million budget.
Coun Kay warned fellow councillors there could be extra costs if removing the cladding exposed unexpected damage to the stonework below.
Therefore he successfully sought authorisation to transfer £300,000 of the surplus to the Witton Park project to ease ‘pressure’ on the borough capital budget.
The council is undertaking a ‘full restoration of the library facade to its original 1920s’ appearance’.
The £2.3million new community athletics complex includes an indoor 60m sprint track; the first resurfacing of the outdoor track since 1984; improved drainage for the field events area; and covered spectator seating for the first time.
