Huncoat mum to take part in London fashion show after beating cancer
A HUNCOAT mum who beat breast cancer will strut her stuff on the catwalk at a star-studded fashion show in London.
Penny Berisford will be one of 24 men and women taking part in the Breast Cancer Care Show, hosted by British Olympian Denise Lewis OBE and radio DJ Edith Bowman.
Mum-of-one Penny was just 36 when she was diagnosed with ‘horrendous’ cancer in 2001.
She said: “I was quite young so it was a shock. I had a young son and I was scared of not being there for him as he was growing up.”
After an intensive course of treatment, including chemo and radiotherapy, Penny was given the all-clear.
Since 2004, the 47-year-old Penny has worked as a volunteer for Breast Cancer Care, offering support and advice over the phone to women who are going through the same horrific situation she did.
She will be waltzing down the catwalk at the Grosvenor Hotel in October. She said: “I want to show you can look and feel good about yourself after being treated for cancer.”
Her husband Michael and son Oli, 18, will also be in London to watch her model some of the most exclusive designer clothes.
Penny added: “Oli has been promoting it with all his friends. Michael is looking forward to coming down to London to attend the show and my son is really proud.”
The models will wear a range of designer clothing from fashion’s elite including Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.
Penny said: “I would never have had the confidence to do it before.”
Breast Cancer Care chief executive, Samia al Qadhi said: “We are all extremely excited to see our inspiring models take to the catwalk in front of their friends and families to celebrate life after a breast cancer diagnosis.”
