3:00pm Sunday 11th August 2013 in News
WALKERS from across the UK will enjoy picturesque Pendle during the 10th annual walking festival.
Pendle Walking Festival is once again packed with over 70 guided walks of varying lengths and difficulty ratings – and they’re all free to join.
Coun Paul White, who is responsible for tourism in Pendle, said: “We believe that ours is the largest free walking festival in the UK. The Pendle Walking Festival is a major highlight in our tourism calendar.
“The variety of walks shows that Pendle is the place to be for exploring the countryside.
“We have a huge network of footpaths over unspoilt wild moorland and rolling hills and through historic villages, with stunning views round every corner.
“We’re expecting thousands of walkers to head to Pendle to discover the range of spectacular walking routes the area has to offer including the dramatic Pendle Hill.”
This year’s festival will run from Saturday, August, 31 to Sunday, September, 8.
Walks vary from easy two mile strolls to more challenging ones of up to 14 miles.
The Aitken Wood sculpture is a two and a half mile walk through woodland adorned with sculptures and art installations linking to the story of the famous Pendle Witches.
More seasoned walkers could enjoy the nine mile walk from the White Hart in Sabden over to Newchurch, across open fell and onto the long ascent to Deerstones.
And very experienced walkers may be interested in tackling the four stages of the Pendle Way over four days including the imposing Pendle Hill.
Mike Williams, Pendle Council’s Tourism Officer, said: “We reward anyone who completes our harder walks with Pendle Walking Festival certificates of achievement – they’re an accolade money just can’t buy.”
Free Pendle Walking Festival programmes, which contain information about all the walks, are available to download from www.visitpendle.com.
