Flagging up support for Blackburn Rovers fans in New York
THE Blackburn Rovers flag is flying high - 3,300 miles away in New York.
Fan club, the New York Rovers, meet to watch their heroes at football-themed bar The Football Factor in Manhatten, just in front of the Empire State Building.
Until recently, the group, which ranges in number from eight to 12, had to stand among the flags of some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs which hang from the ceiling.
Now, after posting an appeal on the NYC Rovers’ Facebook page, enough money was donated by fans across the globe to enable the fan club to buy a 10ft by 6ft flag.
Lancashire-born IT worker Steven Bradley joined the club when he moved to New York from Preston with his American wife Diana two years ago.
He said: “It was set up by somebody who wanted a Brad Friedal shirt after watching the world cup. The only one he could get was a Blackburn Rovers jersey.”
Talking about the fans who helped raise enough cash to buy a flag, Steven said: “I’ve always known that Rovers had the best fans in the world and once again they have proved it to me.”
Steven hasn’t bumped into any rival Clarets fans since moving New York but hopes to organise something in time for the derby on September 14.
Stuart Ashworth, from Blackburn, sent a donation for the flag and wrote on the club’s Facebook site. “It’s a good idea for our overseas-based fans to show their long-term support by investing in a flag that will be used on match days.”
The club has more than 1,200 members on Facebook and Twitter and recently flew a ‘Venkys out’ flag at a wrestling event in New York.
The club can be found at www.facebook.com/newyorkrovers.
