Care home in Bacup receives formal warning
A CARE home has been served with a formal warning after government inspectors slammed the way it was being run.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has demanded improvements at Burwood Residential Home in Todmorden Road, Bacup, by the end of this month.
The home’s manager said the issues raised had been addressed and that its residents were happy with the care provided.
CQC inspectors made an unannounced visit to the home on May 29 and found it failed to meet standards in cleanliness and infection control, safety and suitability of premises and the training of supporting workers.
The most serious breach related to poor assessment and monitoring of the quality of its own services.
A report noted that accurate cleaning records had not been kept, access to the ground floor fire exit was blocked and that some staff were not trained in infection control. The report said: “Although we found that some improvements had been made to the system for monitoring the quality of the service provided, this did not include the standard of cleanliness and the safety of the premises.”
The home, which caters for around 24 people, was given a deadline of the end of this month to implement changes.
Manager Deborah Watson said: “We have addressed all the issues and August 31 can’t come around quickly enough for us.
“The problems were mainly to do with missing signatures and paperwork really is taking over.
“My residents come first and I know they are all happy and that is reflected in the report.”
A spokeswoman for the CQC said: “If the required improvements are not made within the set timescale, the CQC has a range of enforcement powers which include restricting the services that a provider can offer, or, in the most serious cases, suspending or cancelling a service.”
CQC inspectors will return unannounced to the home in due course to check whether the required improvements have been made.
