A BRAVE mum who is fighting an aggressive cancer in her bones will join hundreds of women in Blackburn’s Race For Life next week.

Sarah Hilton, from Feniscowles, has been fighting the disease since last year, and wants others to join her on the 5k route in Witton Park.

The 41-year-old, a former kitchen assistant at Westholme School, in Meins Road, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2012, after seeing specialists at Burnley General Hospital.

She underwent surgery to have her left breast removed, but further scans revealed the cancer had already spread into her lungs, liver and bones.

Further surgery and chemotherapy followed, but doctors said they could not remove the disease from her bones and spine.

Sarah, of Preston Old Road, said: “It’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. When they told me I just thought ‘that’s it’.

“I’ve not been given a time-frame, but I’ve just had to get on with things. There’s always someone worse off than me and I’ve just got to be strong about it.”

Single mum Sarah has also avoided telling her son Connor, 10, saying it would be ‘too heartbreaking’ to tell him how bad the diagnosis is.

She said: “He knows I’ve been in hospital, but I’ve not actually told him it’s cancer.

“He’s too young to know about it and I just decided that what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

“Despite everything I am going through, I have been very lucky that the chemotherapy hasn’t affected me too much.

“I’m so lucky to have my family and so many lovely friends around me to help.

“I feel quite well at the moment and I am just getting on with my life the best way I can.”

Liz Booth, the charity’s events manager in Blackburn, said: “Race For Life is non-competitive.

“It doesn’t matter how fit or fast you are.

“Taking part is about joining together against a disease that affects all of us.

“You can walk the 5k route, run it, or jog it if you prefer.”

Organisers hope the event, which is being staged in Witton Park on Wednesday, will raise about £75,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Entries for the Blackburn event close on Sunday.
