Aldi to open new branch in Blackburn

A NEW Aldi store will open in Blackburn early next year.

The company has bought the site of the old Poundstretcher store on Barbara Castle Way, and signs have already gone up outside the building advertising the new supermarket.

Last year the supermarket, which shuns well-known brands in favour of no frills products at budget prices, saw UK sales rise by 31.5 per cent, outstripping the ‘big four’ supermarkets – Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are pleased to confirm that we have bought the site of the Poundstretcher store on Barbara Castle Way. We are planning to extend and refurbish the current unit with a view to opening an Aldi store there in the first half of 2014.

“Planning permission for the site already exists, as the unit was previously used as a Netto store, but we will be seeking planning permission in the near future for our planned works.

“We are looking forward to bringing local shoppers brand-like quality products at everyday low prices.”

With The Park pub on Montague Street and the new unnamed lane running beside it, connecting to Nab Lane, with the entrance to the former Poundstretcher off this, how can Aldi's address be Barbara Castle Way?
With this little bit of road being nameless, perhaps we could name it Penny Lane, since we don't have one and it would seem most appropriate.

Preston is retail capital of Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen now the biggest Authority in Lancashire with a population of 147,500 is losing grounds to Preston in retails, leisure and hotels.

Blackburn will not get a Disney store in the next 20years. We aren't a city and the footfall or rather the enough of the correct clientele will not be enough for that to happen. If this was to some how happen then I will stand corrected.

Jack and Jones don't need their own store their product lines are already sold else where I'm the town.

Monsoon accessorize lready failed in blackburn in Blackburn it will be a long time before they are back.

Waterstones , a bookstore? not in this town.

Star bucks are 10 a penny and we have a costa coffee, towns need more independents not these Carbon copy outlets any way.

Curry digital the only one on the list that would likely turn a profit as there is no where other than the Panasonic shop and Argos to buy tech items in the town centre.

Miss Selfridge are part of Arcadia group who shut down Burtons etc recently in Blackburn. They didnt do this because they were making money.

Shopping Centres are going to get worse because of internet shopping, that's a fact. Thats Entertainment is the latest victim in Blackburn so we now have no record shop. Town centre shops can't compete with the likes of Amazon but cut price supermarkets like Aldi can.It hasn't been confirmed yet if the Ewood Aldi is to remain when the Montague Street one opens, but I would think there is room for two at opposite ends of town. But having shopped at the old Netto in the same place, I think they need to sort out the entry/exit next to the old Park Hotel. Coming out to turn right onto Montague Street is a nightmare and will only get worse when the link road from Wainwright Bridge is finished.
