A WEDDING cake maker has made it to the top tier of her profession — after winning an award at an international show.

Tracey Rothwell, 25, from Bacup, stole the show with her alternative wedding cake based on the 1986 cult film Labyrinth, featuring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly.

The mum-of-two, who owns the Little Cherry and Black Cherry Cake companies, scooped a gold certificate and best in class in the wedding category at the Cake International Show, which was held at Event City in Manchester from March 8-10.

Tracey, who has previously made cakes for Sam Aston, best known as Chesney Brown from ITV’s Coronation Street, and former Burnley footballer Marc Pugh, had never entered a cake into a show before.

The five-tier design was made using a dummy cake and decorated using craft icing sugar.

She said: “The week of the competition I had a number of problems so I was unable to actually finish the cake.

“I was going to have another few characters on it and I didn’t have the time to colour it as well as I would have liked.

“I wasn’t sure what the judges would make of it as it wasn’t a typical white wedding cake but I decided to go for it anyway.

“I was hoping just to get a bronze so I was shocked when I was awarded a gold.

“At the end of the competition I was then told that I had also been given best in class which came even more as a surprise.”

Tracey makes cakes full time after getting the baking bug when she was a teenager.

Her cakes have attracted attention from across the UK and last year she was invited to appear on a cake competition on Channel 4 programme The Fern Show, which she went on to win.
