READY to go: manager Matt Cooper helps visual supervisor Lucy Crook and Rachael Varo prepare for the opening of the new-look Debenhams
RETAIL giant Debenhams has unveiled a multi-million pound refurbishment and extension of its store in Blackburn.
An additional 4,700sq ft of shopping space has been created with an expansion into three adjacent units in The Mall Blackburn.
The new cosmetics and jewellery hall are part of a range of improvements Debenhams is undertaking this year, which will include an enlarged store entrance, new flooring, lighting and internal finishes.
Bucks fizz and chocolates were handed out to customers yesterday who got the first glimpses of the revamped Dior, Estee Lauder and Clinique counters.
As well as relocating and refurbishing the existing beauty houses, Debenhams has also introduced three new beauty brands – Urban Decay, Benefit and Bare Minerals.
Store manager Matt Cooper said he was delighted to reveal the new-look store to customers.
He said: “People are loving the new cosmetics hall. Many customers have already told me there’s no need to drift out to Preston to get their makeup any more.
“With the beauty hall relaunch today there’s a real buzz among colleagues.
“We’re confident customers are going to love the new and improved shopping experience.
“The investment demonstrates a real commitment to Blackburn and hopefully shows our customers we’re as loyal to them as they are to us.”

Labour Council has destroyed Blackburn town centre not the mall shopping centre. Blackburn Labour council did not allow investments like Preston.Recently a luxury flats was turned down by Labour on Montague Street.A hotel in town centre approved when many towns in Lancashire like Blackpool,Bolton,Pre
ston and Lancaster already has town centre hotels.Blackburn is twenty years behind Preston. Many regeneration projects in Blackburn town centre like the Cathedral regeneration project ,bus station and the orbital road has taken ten years to be approved by the Labour Council and it will ten years to complete.Preston projects far bigger than Blackburn regeneration projects and past Preston projects were completed in very short time while Blackburn Council hit a snag on planning and fundings on Orbital Road,Bus station and Cathedral projects.

In the past 2/3 years or so we have seen new stores by Primark, H&M, New Look, USC, Bank, Pandora Toymaster, Millies Cookies , Deichmann, Select and Costa have entered the town.
Larger stores from Next, Topshop/Topman, JD Sports, Select and now Debenhams.
Yeah Blackburn still isn't great but this hasn't been helped by the loss of HMV, JJB, Peacocks due to factors which extend beyond Blackburn. We almost lost Game and for similar reasons.
Retail is in a massive transition at the moment and I actually think that whilst Blackburn could do with a Currys Digital and perhaps some of the stores named above it has actually evolved when an unprecedented amount of retails companies have gone under.

Too be fair this is a brilliant investment into Blackburn town centre. This shows that some retail is still more viable in Blackburn otherwise they wouldn't commission an expensive refit and expansion of this size.

For me, Blackburn suffers because of a lack of decent places to eat & the sheer number of kids, teenagers & groups of lads hanging around in the Mall. The goths skateboard arena out the back of Debenhams isn't a good advert either!!
Eating & shopping go hand in hand for lots of people who generally like to make a day out of it.
As said in the other post, on line shopping & the retail parks are crippling town centre's. When people do visit them, they want a pleasant environment to shop in. Blackburn needs to stop catering to the kids & the Pound shop brigade, get one or two more big name stores in (a good bookstore please!!!), decent eateries & people will come back & more importantly...spend.

Like you say the kids that hangs around back of Debenhams with skateboards the council and police needs to act and move them out. This isn't a skateboard park, this is a town centre people go for shopping.
Eateries we have one decent place that's Mcdonalds and a Exchange coffee shop in Fleming square the rest are just cafes and take aways in markets ground floor in the Mall and Darwen street.
We need more upmarket eateries like Nandos, KFC, Burger King, Harry Ramsden, Pizza Hut, Starbucks Coffee and Krispie Kreme.
People will come back and spend more.Lack of choices and not enough eateries and big name stores is the reason many shoppers still head to Preston and Manchester.
