Fury at plans for 260 homes in Whalley

THE chairman of a residents’ group has spoken of his fury after another planning application was submitted for Whalley.

Developer, the Commercial Estates Group, wants to build 260 houses as well as a primary school on land to the east of Clitheroe Road, known as Lawsonsteads.

It comes after a resubmitted plan by the same group for 55 houses and a nursing home on the same site was passed on appeal in August.

CEG had also applied to build 300 houses at the site in 2011, were refused by Ribble Valley Council.

Nick Walker, chairman of the Save Whalley Village Action Group, said: “My reaction is the same as the last time CEG submitted an application - I am absolutely furious. We are so frustrated that this is happening.

“Despite everybody’s best efforts, the applications are still coming in with demands for more and more houses. The problem is that the village will turn into a housing estate.”

Among the issues Mr Walker has with the application was the effect it would have on the appearance of the village, lack of sewage provision and not enough school places.

He said: “These new houses would mean 233 more children. A one form entry primary school is not going to be big enough.

“If it is going to happen, Lancashire County Council needs to secure a much bigger site for the school, otherwise we will be in the same position we are in now with kids transported everywhere.”

CEG was not available for comment.

The village is to appear on the Politics Show on BBC1 on Sunday as part of a film on how the North West is affected by planning applications.

Mr Walker said: “I hope the programme will highlight the problems that the Ribble Valley is facing.”

The Politics Show is on the BBC. That means that we will get to know only what the BBC want us to know.
CEG are taking the pi** here. There are enough green fields to build on in Yorkshire. Stay on your own side of the Pennines - you are not wanted here.

Personally I think it's a good scheme and am considering moving to a "cleaner area" without moving too far away from my roots. Hopefully this may make the decision a little more affordable.

Not sure why all the NIMBY's are protesting???

Highlighting all the antisocial behaviour and poor sentencing by the courts is driving middle class flight from our towns into the rural areas so that Landowners can cash in on the countryside without having to contribute to the regeneration of the run down urban areas.
All this rubbish about Nimbyism is being chucked around by Landowners and developers and anyone else who wants a few easy quid.

Come to Blackburn and Darwen. The councillors haven't any backbone or morals and welcome developers with open arms to build on greenfield land, supported by Jack Straw.

I've always thought antisocial behaviour responsible for middle-class flight to the suburbs and beyond, stretching themselves financially, helping drive up house prices, stressing themselves out, more road miles (and fuel and congestion) to get to work/school, and vandalising our green spaces that should be used for growing food.

Wouldn't it be easier all round just to deal with the scummy antisocials more effectively?

Agree, but they won't do it will they? They just let them bleed the system dry.

So I'm going to be one of the "White Flights" and get myself on the Hamster Wheel of life (aka Whalley). Looking forward to the big mortgage.

Once again....... NIMBY's not wanting homes for others. The myth that the dribble valley is a nice place to live will be blown wide open once you experience the travelling criminal elements of Clitheroes, Hynburn, and Blackbun with Darwin.
