Cancer patient from Barrowford died after fall on shopping centre escalator

A WOMAN died after falling and hitting her head while on a shopping centre escalator, an inquest heard.

Joan Padgett, 77, of Bankfield, Barrowford, died in hospital the day after the incident at the Pendle Rise shopping centre in Nelson.

An inquest at Burnley Magistrates Court yesterday heard how Mrs Padgett had visited the shopping centre with her husband, Alan, on December 12 last year.

A statement from Mr Padgett said his wife had been very poorly after being diagnosed with cancer and had been having a difficult time as she had been told no surgery was available.

He said: “On the day in quest-ion she told me she felt well enough to go on the shopping trip.

“We left the car park on level one and then we separated.

“I was going to one shop and she was going down a level by the escalator to look for a head scarf.”

Mr Padgett said a short time later he heard noise and a commotion and was then asked for by name by shoppers who directed him to where his wife lay.

Mrs Padgett was taken to the Blackburn Royal Hospital where she was treated for head injuries but did not regain consciousness.

She left sons Edward and Colin and grandchildren Adam, Kelsey, Ryan, Henry and Abigail.

Mr Padgett said he felt his wife may have overbalanced on the escalator after becoming dizzy as a result of her treatment and medication.

The cause of death was given as head trauma.

East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Sorry this article is nothing to do with this particular article but has anybody read "Gasps in court as neighbour is cleared of killing Colne pensioner"?

My question for the constabulary and the crown prosecution service is why did this case go to court ? I do feel for the family but what a waste of tax payers money. Shame on the constabulary and CPS. I am delighted for the individual who received the not guilty verdict.

My commiserations to the family on this sad event. Unfortunately, danger lies everywhere where there are mechanically-driven devices, even with apparent safety features in place. There was news this week of a tragedy with a toddler who was trapped between a wall and a powered driveway gate, of which there are many. The installer was in court over it.

On a separate note, I understand glossopkid commenting here on a non-related topic as, frustratingly, the LT seems to be getting more selective with allowing comment on some of the more contentious news items as I have previously noted. Understandable if legalities prevent it but very bad (and dangerous) journalism if otherwise.

Daily Mail always allow comments on articles that LET don't...I don't think it has anything to do with legalities, its LET not being prepared to either vett posts before they go on or tackle the trouble makers by banning them. But no, they take the easy option & stop everyone from commenting.

I have given up on the Daily Wail, they do not like the harsh truth (like most of the MSM) and will not publish my comments anymore. Like the LT, seemingly, they are part of the problem rather than the solution to this countries' many ills.

I have recently found that much stronger comment (although in lower numbers) on big issues like immigration, the EUSSR, corrupt bankers, treasonous LibLabCon politicians, etc, etc, - even my pops at the NUJ for helping decimate the British National movement - are allowed in the online Daily Express which I give the paper full credit for.

(No disrespect intended to the family in the above article)
