Fire protection firm Promat to close Blackburn site after 28 years

A FIRM which manufactures fire protection products has announced it will close its Blackburn site next year.

Promat UK Ltd makes a range of heat resistant products including panels and building boards and sealing products to protect cables and pipes through walls and floors.

A consultation with all affected employees at the site at Victoria Works, in Bonsall Street, has started.

No details have been released about the number of jobs affected or if there will be job cuts.

A company statement said: “It is with regret that Promat UK Ltd is announcing that it is leaving the Blackburn site after 28 years.

“The decision to close after so many years has not been taken lightly and has been strongly influenced by the site’s location which limits the scope for development.

“The current Durasteel fire protection range and Dalfrate high performance insulation products will continue to be manufactured within the group at new locations within the UK.

“We are currently in consultation with all the affected employees on site.

“It is anticipated that manufacturing at the site will continue during 2013, with final closure in first half of 2014.

“Promat has been closely involved with the local community for many years, supporting local schools and events and will continue to do so during the wind- down period.

“Promat would like to thank all our stakeholders including past and present employees for the support they have given to this site.”

The site has manufactured fire protection and high temperature insulation products since 1965.

In 2002, Promat Fire Protection, as it was known then, formed part of the merger between Cape Calsil Systems and Promat Inter- national, and it took the name Promat UK Ltd.

It operates other sites in Worksop, Glasgow, Dublin and Dubai.

Truly sad news.
I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone there all the very best for the future and thank them for being so friendly when I worked there as an agency worker before the end of the century.
Very fond memories of my time there, operating the press brake, producing pressed sheets faster than expected.
Had the engineers scratching their heads when producing more than it was supposed to per hour.
Again, best of luck to everyone.
