WANDERERS were last night waiting for news of the extent of Mark Davies’s knee injury.

The midfielder limped out of Tuesday night’s victory over Peterborough after turning awkwardly whilst chasing down a defender.

But the club yesterday remained silent on the severity of the problem, or how long it could be before the 25-year-old playmaker is able to return.

Dougie Freedman is waiting to see whether Tyrone Mears or Chris Eagles will rejoin the squad for this weekend's game against Barnsley.

Mears has had a blood infection, while Eagles also fell ill at the start of the week.

Davies’s injury has unfortunately coincided with him signing a new two-year extension to his contract, which will now run until 2017.

Freedman hopes to build a team around the Midlander, who has only just returned from a three-month spell out of action with a shoulder injury.

“It’s good news for us and hopefully good news for him,” the manager said.

“I wanted to get that done. I came into the club and they were talking to him. They offered him a contract in the summer time.

“When I came in there were deals on the table for Mark and Adam Bogdan. Adam was done within a couple of weeks of me being here.

“Mark’s was dragging on a bit through small matters. I wanted him to be at the club; I think the fans do. I want to build a team round him. So, we tied up the loose ends.”

Freedman is likely to give an update on Davies’s injury situation in his weekly press conference at Euxton this afternoon.
