Haslingden school on alert after suspicious man is spotted

PATROLS have been stepped up outside two primary schools after a man was seen acting suspiciously.

In a newsletter to parents at St Mary’s RC Primary School, Haslingden, the headteacher Donna McNicoll urged parents to be vigilant during half-term and to accompany children to school following the holidays after the man was seen outside the Lime Road building at the start and end of the school day. He has also been spotted waiting outside Haslingden Primary School, in Ryefield Avenue.

In the letter, Miss McNicoll said: “We have had reports of a man acting suspiciously outside at the start and end of the school day. He has also been seen outside Haslingden Primary School. I have spoken to the children about it in assembly and the police have been informed. Please be vigilant during school holidays and I also advise that the children do not walk to and from school unaccompanied.”

The incidents have been reported to police who reassured worried parents that officers would been patrolling the area more frequently after half-term.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “Parents have reported that there was a man who was outside the school on a couple of occasions both before and after school. However there is nothing to suggest that the man has approached any of the kids or parents.

“When the kids go back we will be stepping up patrols and we will probably speak to the man and ask him a few questions. We have advised the schools to call us immediately if the man reappears.”
