Watchdog urges Lancashire Police review over Jimmy Savile sex allegations

A POLICE watchdog has asked Lancashire Constabulary to review its previous sex abuse investigations involving former BBC presenter Jimmy Savile.
A former police inspector has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) by the West Yorkshire force, after he allegedly contacted the Surrey constabulary, before Savile was quizzed on sex assault claims in 2009.
And the revelation has prompted the IPCC to urge other forces, involved in exploring historic sex abuse claims involving Savile, to review their own records.
Six inquiries are said to involve sex assaults carried out in Lancashire or on women who now live in the county.
The watchdog is examining whether a catalogue of institutional failings allowed Savile abuse youngsters over five decades.
Rachel Cerfontyne, IPCC Commisioner, said constabularies including Lancashire, and five others, should ‘go back and consider all relevant information’ to see whether any conduct issues arise’.
