Blackpool Tower shines after second switch-on in its 119-year history

TOURIST favourite Blackpool Tower is again shining in its fully-lit glory after only the second switch-on in its 119-year history last night.

The tower, which uses 5,508 lights and is capable of producing 16.7million colour combinations, has lit legs for the first time since 2008.

And visiting East Lancashire love birds can also enjoy a bright red theme this Valentine’s Day, with a pink heart adorning the Promenade-facing aspect.

Kate Shane, general manager of the tower, said: “This is a really momentous event in the incredible history of Blackpool Tower.

“From its very beginnings back in 1894, it has been a beacon on the UK’s skyline, and we are very proud to work with the borough council to be able to switch the lights back on and return this iconic landmark to its full glory.

“There is so much love for Blackpool Tower we felt it only right to celebrate the completion of the lighting with a Valentine’s Day theme in red, the colour of love, along with a heart to shine for all to see.”

Coun Graham Cain, the council’s cabinet member for tourism and culture, said: “The council’s illuminations team have been working extremely hard to make sure that all the lights on the tower could be up and running as soon as possible.

“The result of this is a fantastic display of light that will shine for many miles across the North West. Blackpool’s love on Valentine’s Day can be seen by thousands.”
