Demand for beef produced in the north west has never been higher, say farmers

DEMAND for assured, quality North West produced beef has never been higher, according to the National Farmers’ Union.

The organisation said it has noticed shoppers trading up or opting for fresh British meat over imported processed products in the wake of the horse meat scandal.

Adam Briggs, NFU Lancashire County Adviser, said: “When the issue broke, the NFU immediately contacted major retailers to express our anger and disappointment that their actions and the actions of their suppliers had undermined the hard work of farmers in producing quality, traceable produce.

“We followed this up with our president Peter Kendall writing to their chief executives, asking that they take steps to ensure that labelling is transparent.

“Cheap food should not come at the cost of standards of safety, traceability and transparency, which all consumers, regardless of budget, are entitled to.”

There is nothing wrong with eating horse meat. As long as it is sold as horse meat and not passed off as something else. Horse meat is eaten in many different countries by many people. It is their choice. What is abhorrent is the unscrupulous selling of cheap horse meat as beef. Thus conning unsuspecting purchasers. This is the trouble in today's society, either you want food cheap or you want to con people. Ordinary shoppers have no way of knowing what they are buying. They rely on the good will of the suppliers. Even the big supermarkets are getting conned. I suspect that most of the meat is coming from Eastern Europe where crime seems to be a way of life. We are an island nation, perhaps we should go back to being an isolated island nation. Relying soley on our own endeavours. Making our own laws to prevent this sort of thing happening.

The horses may well have been on medication such as Bute for lameness or a good many more..People should be concerned on the health side of all this.

I am not disputing your concerns re medication. Obviously illegal use of horse meat can be a health hazard. My point was that legal horse meat is fine. But it should be sold as such. Not mixed with other meats to bulk it out for cheapness. The public must be fully informed as to what they are eating. It is then their choice whether they eat horse meat or not.
