Ribble Valley students’ £3,500 for Zimbabwe charity

PUPILS at Stonyhurst College have raised £3,500 for a children’s charity in Zimbabwe.

The Ray of Light Children’s Centre provides food, clothing and education for some of the city’s poorest children in Harare and currently supports about 50 children between the ages of three to 18.

Some of them are Aids orphans caring for younger siblings.

The Ray of Light premises currently consist of two rooms in an unfinished house which has no mains water or electricity.

With Stonyhurst’s donation, the charity hopes to buy a plot of land so that it can build better facilities for its work.

Students at the Ribble Valley school have organised fundraising events throughout the school such as cake sales, discos and dinners.

Commendable but surely during these hard times in our country and funding being cut to British charities and organisations then raising money for Britain's poor would have been better? Would you trust any money in Zimbabwe anyway not to end up in Mugabe's hands?

I doubt whether kids who go to Stonyhurst have ever been exposed to poverty in this country.
