Author lists 50 greatest Lancastrians

A LIST of the 50 greatest Lancastrians has been drawn up for a new book that celebrates how they shaped the Red Rose county's history.

Author Elizabeth Ashworth has delved into the records dating back to the 14th century to discover a list of people she calls 'Champion Lancastrians'.

They include those who have performed heroic deeds, created life-changing inventions and spread their endearing Lancastrian charm across the world.

Elizabeth said: "Writing the book posed not so much the problem of who to include, but who to leave out.

"I have been amazed by the number of talented people who, over hundreds of years, have achieved so much, not only for their county, but also for their country.

"I thought it was important to include some Lancastrians who are alive today, because they are helping to shape the future.

"I picked those who seemed to be true Lancastrians. I think people here are more willing to stand up and say what they think. "In other parts of the country people wait for others to say something, but we are not afraid to do that."

Elizabeth worked in nursery and primary schools across the county before turning to writing full-time.

The mother-of-one has spent over 30 years working as a freelance writer and has been published in a range of national newspapers and magazines.

And she decided to write the book heralding the 50 greatest Lancastrians because she said their stories needed documenting.

Champion Lancastrians, is published by Sigma Press and is priced £7.95.
