Burnley rambler rescued in the Lake District

A WOMAN from Burnley was involved in a dramatic rescue in the Lake District after suffering an epileptic fit while out walking.

The 23-year-old rambler, who has not been named, was walking with a group on a path near Ullswater when she collapsed between the villages of Howtown and Glenridding.

A mountain rescue team used its boat to come to the woman’s aid before she was taken to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance.

The path was inaccessible by road, so Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, which responded to the incident at around 2.35pm on Thursday, was forced to reach the scene via the lake.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Members of her party reported the incident to the police, who in turn called out the rescue team.

“The air ambulance and a land ambulance were also mobilised.

“The team reached the casualty location via the lake using its rescue boat, the quickest means to access many parts of the lakeshore path.

“The casualty was placed in a stretcher then taken by boat to the air ambulance, which had landed further along the shore.

“She was then flown to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.”

The Great North Air Ambulance said its Pride of Cumbria helicopter had been deployed to the scene and its paramedics treated the victim there.
