East Lancashire villages set for 20mph zones

SEVERAL smaller villages across East Lancashire are set to benefit from a 20mph speed reduction programme.

County highway engineers have been deliberating over which areas to include in the fifth phase of the Lancashire-wide 20mph zones roll-out.

And the lobbying of parish councillors and residents in the likes of Worston, Mellor Brow, Goodshawfold, Spen Brook, Roughlee and Cowpe has won out.

County councillor Tim Ashton, Lancashire’s highways cabinet member, has approved zones for no fewer than 28 locations across the area.

Rossendale had the greatest success, with 11 initiatives rubberstamped, closely followed by Pendle on eight.

There are four scheduled for the Ribble Valley, also including Wilpshire and Church Lane in Mellor.

Hyndburn only secured one, with Great Harwood’s Clinkham Road being selected.

Padiham and Burnley West division saw three picked, including Mill Hill Lane in Hapton, Andelene Close and Hameldon Close.

Highways officials say that the 20mph zones will be rolled out across the chosen sites over the next year from this summer onwards.

It'll soon be quicker to walk -- or is that the plan ----------------- plus how much is this costing us the tax payer in these times of austerity.

can't wait until all the local residents start receiving speeding tickets and cameras go up everywhere in their quaint little villages.. these things don't just affect people using it as a short cut to work

hitting the motorist in the pocket again...20mph is certainly not very fuel efficient.....this was tried where my father-in-law lives....didn't last...now reverted back to 30mph.

I would like to see the evidence this measure has reduced accidents. I think some county councillors are easily led by officers. The road safety brigade need to be challenged on some of their statements. I don't believe for one minute that hundreds of people besieged their county councillor demanding these measures.I cringe when I hear M.Ps and councillors claim everybody they talk to has demanded action on one thing or another.I think people should draw up a list of what we need or want in our towns and cities and let the politicians deliver. It would be interesting.
