Ramsbottom pub's winning roast

AN awards-hungry pub in Ramsbottom has been named one of the best venues in the country for a traditional Sunday roast.

Food writers for The Independent picked out just eight venues across the north-west as they scoured the nation for their favourite.

And the Eagle and Child, in Whalley Road, Shuttleworth, was named among the most attractive eateries.

The judges, including Joanna Busk, Karen Barnes and Donald Reid, editors of Fork, Delicious and The Larder magazines were asked to compile a list of the top 50 locations .

Emma Sturgess, a committee member of the Guild of Food Writers, who visited the Ramsbotton pub, was impressed on a number of levels.

She wrote: “The Eagle and Child is a pub with a heart — it runs a social enterprise scheme and the garden is devoted to growing project Incredible Edible.

“Food is local and bolstering, and the classic roast is Bowland beef sirloin with duck fat potatoes.

“Veggie options don’t feel like an afterthought.”
