Success story of Darwen library friends group

THE Friends of Darwen Library will reflect on a year of progress at their annual meeting next month.

The group, set up in 2011, hold the AGM ahead of the normal monthly meeting at the library on February 11, from 6pm.

In his report, chairman John East reflects on a number of successful coffee mornings and the work to find paintings by Darwen artist James Morton, about whom a book has been written.

He said: “Our first of many coffee mornings on Saturdays began to raise funds. By August 2011, more than £300 had been raised. Our presentation of books for the library of £63 was accepted by Blackburn with Darwen library services. To date, more than £400 worth of books have been donated.

“The Morton Paintings took us to another dimension with members researching and finding funding to restore the self portrait pastel and write a book on the history of Morton.
