A YOUTH club axed last year because of a lack of volunteers is to restart in Weir, it has been announced.

The Doals Centre in Burnley Road closed its doors to the popular club in May as there were not enough adult helpers to supervise the teenagers.

But a campaign by youngsters in the village has seen the community rally round and the club will reopen on January 25.

The club is for high school pupils who live in the village and for former pupils of Northern Prim-ary School.

Current year six pupils at that school will also be made welcome at the sessions, which will take place on the second and fourth Friday of every month in school term time.

Weir Youth Club leader Billy Limmack said: “The closure was a great disappointment to the young people who attended — some nights we had more than 40 youngsters through the door.

“Last Friday, we held a meeting for parents and helpers to see if we had enough support to restart the club and we were delighted when 10 people came along. We have also had additional offers of support since.

“We know that the young people in Weir want their club back because they have been asking the volunteers who used to run the club when it was re-opening.

“Now we are delighted to say the first night will be on January 25 and the second on February 8.

“All young people must be registered and their parents or carers must attend the centre to complete a form before they will be allowed to attend the club.”

A special registration night is being held on January 23 at the centre from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

All members will be issued with a card, which will be required for admission to the club.

The £700,000 Doals Centre, also home to Weir Baptist Church, opened in September 2008 following five years of fundraising by the Weir Community Partnership.
