TOWN councillors in Darwen are looking at bringing a dance festival to the town.

The festival would add to the already sizeable list of council-run events in Darwen.

Whitehall town councillor Vicki Rothwell, who owns Dance Crazy Theatre School, based at Craiglands in Watery Lane, is behind the idea.

Coun Rothwell, herself a qualified dance teacher, said the idea was to set up an all-inclusive festival that would be aimed at people of all ages.

She said: “Bringing a dance festival to Darwen is my next big project.

“I am looking for vol-unteers from all over the borough to get involved to help try to run it.

“We want to involve as many people as possible, both old and young.

“There is a festival in Blackburn but it is just one show at King George’s Hall that doesn’t include everyone.”

Plans for the event are still in the development stages and no date has yet been set. Coun Rothwell said the festival would take place over a weekend and include a number of venues across the town.

There would be an opportunity for people to get dance lessons, with the weekend culminating in one big live show. Coun Rothwell said: “I would like to see dance companies and schools coming down and utilising their skills to get people into dancing.

“They may even pick up a few extra customers while they were here.

“It will be completely all-inclusive, with things like ballroom dancing for elderly people and street dancing for the youngsters.

“I also want to have something going on for people in wheelchairs and other disabled people to get involved.”
