VIDEO: Burnley Meat Loaf act must pay £18,000 to American rock legend

A MEAT Loaf tribute singer has said he has no option but to declare himself bankrupt after his legal ‘spat out of hell’ with the American star left him facing an £18,315 bill.
Dean Torkington, 49, toured with his show To Hell And Back: (A Tribute To Meat Loaf) for 16 years.
But last year he was sued for being an ‘online imposter’ by the Californian-based artist.
The row centred on a website which Mr Torkington used to promote his act — www.meatloaf.org.
A judgement issued by the US District Court for the Central District of California found in favour of 65-year-old Michael Aday, Meat Loaf’s real name.
Judge Michael Fitzgerald ordered Mr Torkington to drop registration and control of the website and transfer it to Aday and awarded $25,000 in damages and $4,769 costs to the Bat Out Of Hell singer.
The legal proceedings continued despite a personal plea to the star from Mr Torkington, in which he compared his current predicament to problems in the singer’s past.
Mr Torkington, of Ightenhill, Burnley, has extensively toured around East Lancashire and further afield during his career.
His next show will be as an Elton John tribute, Captain Fantastic, at The Empire Theatre, Blackburn on Valentine’s Day.
He said: “He won’t get a penny from me. I’m skint.
“It may mean I won’t be let into the States. That doesn’t bother me as I’ve no plans to go there.
“I used to love him but now I hate him, he’s trying to ruin me.
“I’ve used the domain name since 2000 and always made it clear I was a tribute artist.
“With this and other debts I will have no option but to declare myself bankrupt. I’m having to apply for insolvency.”
The row with the multi-million selling artist, famous for Dead Ringer For Love and I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That), began after a 2006 show in Liverpool.
Mr Torkington drove to the gig, dressed as his idol in a van spray-painted with Meat Loaf images with the website name clearly on display.
After the show he claims he was confronted by the multi-millionaire star.
“When I got backstage I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

“He went crazy. He said he’d seen my van and wanted it sprayed. He told me I couldn’t do my act anymore and that he wanted the website.”
A writ issued by Los Angeles law firm Lavely & Singer, named Mr Torkington as a ‘cybersquatter and online imposter’ and applied for $100,000 in damages.
Mr Torkington, a former Ivy Bank High School pupil, did not travel to California for the court hearing.
He no longer performs as a Meat Loaf tribute, diversifying his show to cover several other artists including Elton John, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen.
He has also shed around 11 stone since 2010.
Mr Torkington said he had not received a reply after making a personal appeal to Meat Loaf about the case.
“I just can’t believe he’s treated me like this,” he said.
“I wrote to him personally pleading with him to leave me alone.
“It’s well documented that he’s had troubled times with debts and relationship problems in the 1970s.
“I asked him for a little kindness and consideration but he just carried on anyway.”
Meat Loaf’s 1977 Bat Out of Hell LP has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
He recently announced on his website that his ‘Last At Bat’ April and May tour of Britain and Europe will be his last shows.
No representatives for Meat Loaf were available for comment.

Cannot stand domain squatters like you, if you had the domain "meatloaf-tribute" it would've been fine but you were playing with fire.
Only wish more people like you were sued for everything then the internet might end more better regulated.

What you're saying is Meatloaf could've come to the UK, nipped over to see Dean, asked him to stop using his name, got a good head kicking off the imposter and his cronies, flew home to US, suffered brain damage because of the kicking and the US courts can't do anything cos it was committed in the UK?

From my account of this guy..he's an honest and likeable individual who will give you his last quid...
It's a shame ML felt the need to bash a UK guy only trying to entertain the public...

As it happens I think Dean is absolutely fabulous, brilliant, fantastic, i've spent a couple of hours browsing YouTube for his 'tributes', joined his group and i'm even contemplating booking for 14th Feb. It's got sod all to do with my user name, my ancestry, my likes or dislikes, my location in the UK, or anything else you seem to be throwing at folk, wily nilly, without thinking before you (and may I quote you' SPOUT!. I stated a legal fact. You have your opinion and everyone else is entitled to theirs...END OF!

I suggest Dean consults his litigation team about cyber-bullying and unfounded malicious allegations: (quote) ‘Meat loaf would get a good head kicking off the imposter and his cronies’ (unquote) comments of which are defamation of character and NOT legal fact . Comment has appeared in the public domain so therefore possibly injurious to reputation and further ability to earn income. There is enough evidence in print to bring a claim against this accusation.
An Internet Protocol address will trace name and address where computer is register so one should think carefully before leaving personal scurrilous attack or it may not only be the names Dean Torkington and Michael Lee Aday in the case relating to this story.

The U.K has many multi-national companies and private individuals going bankrupt annually and unless you are in a key position to examine someone's private financial affairs and understand their personal circumstances, I think your ignorant and rather provincial comments are far better off restricted to the bar at your local pub where they belong!

So I shall leave it at this last post . Although I DO suggest you try and find the root cause of your bitterness and emotional inferiority; perhaps start by feeding your mind with better fodder than making juvenile comments more suited to a ten year old with learning difficulties than supposedly an adult who is allowed to stay up past bedtime? Try to do something useful with your life instead of bringing down better people than yourself who have accomplished something through hard work and dedication in their lives...that is if you understand what I am saying, which clearly you do not seem to do? Perhaps things will get better for you in the future if you try harder.

Now what you all do is sart a soft drink Co. ,call it CoCa Cola and sell it at the store . See if Coke file's a lawsuit against you . They won't even give you a warning . Just Like the Rolling Stones.
" Mr Torkington said he had not received a reply after making a personal appeal to Meat Loaf about the case." Here are Mr Torkingtons personal appeals:
Dean Torkington
"shove your lawsuit up your **** arse! retire! your past it!!!"
"see you backstage at on of your uk shows! its showdown time!"
" they have a word for people like you here in the uk! ****!!! This is going in all the papers your a disgrace!"
CARRY ON WITH THIS CASE AND ILL MAKE YOUR LIFE HELL ON THE INTERNET!!
Mr Torkington ego is so big he really thinks all Meat Loaf does is to follow his career and is Jealous. Meat good give a big wang dang what he does as long as he didn't steal from him. . Meat has done 4 films and 4 tours since 2009. Torkington's ego is the size of a small planet.
Dean is going Bankrupt from what happen between him and his wife not Meat Loaf. here is a story

The story talks about a 1,000 pounds he had to spend to repaint his truck that had nothing to do with Meat Loaf . He violated a Virgin Records Trademark. Again Dean thinks he is bigger than the law and can do what ever he wants when he wants . When someone calls him on it it is never his fault , he did nothing wrong. everyone else is to blame. He list on his face page he is a pro. Sorry but Professionals know what is right and wrong in this business.
Now if it were a real law suite among professional entertainers it would have been for millions . What the Judge ordered was court cost not money to Meat Loaf. Just for fun lets get one more Dean Article
