HUNDREDS of bird owners and visitors flocked to Ramsbottom on New Year’s Day for Holcombe Old English Gamefowl Club's 169th annual gamecock show.

A total of 91 birds were entered into the competition’s five categories, including some which had travelled from as far away as Durham.

But is was a relatively local entrant, owned by Michael Durkin, from Hoghton, which claimed the Mary Shaw cup for best in show and also won in the pullet class.

The Royal British Legion Club in Central Street hosted the event, which secretary Russell Taylor said was one of the best yet.

Colin Haworth, from Haslingden, won the local class while Gavin Young was the winner of the cock class.

Speaking after the judges had made their final decisions, Mr Taylor said: “It was a really good day and it continues to attract visitors from across the country.

“We’re expecting 200 to 300 members of the public to come and see the birds over the course of the afternoon.

“It’s a great tradition and long may it continue to be a successful event.”
