Plans for new road humps in Blackburn to go ahead

TRAFFIC calming measures in Laburnum Road, Little Harwood, are set to go ahead despite concerns from residents.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s planning and highways committee is set to confirm the scheme despite householders worries about the siting of road humps.

One resident was concerned that the proposed ‘sleeping policemen’ designed to slow down drivers in the new 20mph zone would be inconvenient.

However another homeowner, in the road objected to his alternative proposals for the humps.

Officials also warned councillors that changing the proposals would substantially add to the scheme costs.

They are recommending the committee to authorise the original plan for the road humps.

The traffic calming scheme is necessary because of additional traffic from a new housing development at the end of Laburnum Road.

If anyone can prove to me that any single one of these speed humps has saved a single life or reduced accidents where ever they are placed, I'll eat my hat.
However, I can prove that they do many other things like, increase the time it takes for emergency vehicles to attend any incident and reduce the time to hospital when every minute counts.
That they increase air pollution by the slowing of vehicles.
That they increase wear on vehicles
suspension systems even at very low speeds, less than the advised 20mph.
That children have been killed in vehicular collisions at 5mph.

They just don't work and are expensive to both install and maintain, as is evinced by the statement regarding costs to move something that is only in the planning stage at the moment.

As for, 'traffic calming scheme is necessary because of additional traffic from a new housing development', what evidence does the council have to support that statement?
Why don't the councillors get some potholes dug into the road, as this is a surefire way of calming traffic.
Speeding is a matter for the Police to deal with by way of speed cameras and the Courts, not for Councils to try and predict a problem before it occurs.

speed humps do not work just a cheap way for the blackburn town hall to save money and keep the residents happy.
when was the last time there was a accident on Laburnum Road ?
with the way some drivers in little harwood ignore road markings and park
were they like its not speed humps that we need but proper policing and traffic wardens to come and do the jobs we pay them to do

If this is anything like Openshaw Drive then the residents will need to budget for lots of damaged springs, shock absorbers and other components.

The success of measures to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads is one of the greatest public policy successes of the last 30 years.

In 1980, 5953 people wer killed on Britain's roads and 323 000 were injured. In 2011, despite a massive increase in the number of vehicles on our roads, 1910 people were killed and 204000 injured. Over the last 30 years, we have managed to reduce road deaths by two thirds, saving 4000 lives per year.

The various methods used to reduce accidents may not be popular wiht everybody but they have been extremely effective.

I live on laburnum rd. it is used as a speedway , people are reaching speeds of 70/80 mph video now if I see whizzing down the road. just before the election , the local councillor for the ward witnessed this behaviour . when he approached the culprits he was shouted , sworn and threthened by the young drivers. I make a video on my phone now every time I see anybody racing up and down , the police need proof, recently someone was testing a aston martin on this road , they easily reached 60+ miles down laburnum rd. I caught it on video.

speed bumps make sense , people will stop using the road as a track to test fast cars . the police are called constantly because of speeding, but cant do anything if there is no evidence of the crime after it happened.. so there hands are tied. at leaset the bumbs will stop constant call outs and the police can deal with real crime.
