A 24-year-old Nelson woman went into an Accrington store with her partner and child and loaded up a trolley with £528 worth of booze.

Blackburn magistrates heard when the couple were challenged by security staff he ran off leaving Cherrie Spencer to face the music.

Spencer, 24, formerly of Hawarden Close, pleaded guilty to theft from Tesco and failing to surrender to bail. She was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months, made subject to a 7 pm to 7 am curfew for 12 weeks and ordered to pay £85 costs.

Andrew Church-Taylor, defending, said Spencer was living with her partner in Nelson at the time of the offence.

“He was responsible for filling the trolley but she has to accept she was aware of what was going on and didn’t do enough to distance herself from the offence,” said Mr Church-Taylor.

“The relationship is now over and she has moved on.”
