THE Mayor of Whitworth has praised the town’s Remembrance Day turnout.

Coun David Barnes said he was ‘humbled’ by the numbers that attended Sunday’s ceremony at the Riverside Civic Hall.

More than 500 people lined the route from the Memorial Gardens in Facit to the civic hall, led by Vale and Healey Brass Band.

Coun Barnes said: “The Mayoress and myself were truly humbled by the numbers in attendance at the commemorations. Whitworth is a town of only 7,700 people, so to have over 500 people in attendance is quite something.

“We were especially delighted to see so many young people this year; there were a good number of children with parents and grandparents, the uniformed organisations always turn out in force, and it was lovely to see young representatives of our schools and community organisations too.

“On behalf of the Town Council I thank everyone who came along, and all those who helped with the organisation of the day, from the bottom of my heart.”
