Blackburn construction products firm to set up factory in Russia

AN East Lancashire firm is to set up a manufacturing plant in Russia, safeguarding 150 jobs in the area.
Blackburn-based Tensar International, which has its UK office at Shadsworth Business Park, has signed an agreement to build the new plant in St Petersburg.
The company specialises in soil stabilisation and ground reinforcements, used during construction.
The agreement was announced as Business Secretary Vince Cable called for British firms to pursue new exporting opportunities in Russia when hosted a business summit with Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov. Tensar International president Bob Vevoda said the plant would produce Tensar’s TriAx geogrid range, used to stabilise road construction over soft soils and to optimize pavement design for roads, ports and airfields.
Mr Vevoda said: “Our sales into Russia have expanded over recent years.
“We are seeing growth in demand for our products in transportation projects, utilities and the energy sector.
“Forecasts indicate that strong infrastructure growth will continue for the next decade and beyond making it clear to us that a plant in Russia was a necessity.”
Vince Cable said: “Britain’s trade with Russia is rapidly expanding and the opportunities will only continue to grow as its economy opens up further to trade and investment.
“Important steps like Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organisation earlier this year are making it easier for UK firms to do business there.
“We look forward to working closely with Russia to further develop new opportunities, delivering real economic results for both countries.”
