Hundreds of extra spectators expected at Blackburn's Witton Park
ORGANISERS of Blackburn’s annual bonfire at Witton Country Park say they are prepared for an influx of extra visitors following the cancellation of other community firework displays.
The display will see £4,500 worth of fireworks set off alongside the traditional 30ft fire.
More than 20,000 residents attended last year’s event and the committee are expecting thousands more next month, given the cancellation of Clitheroe Community Bonfire following concerns by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
A bonfire at the Prairie playing fields in Burnley is also understood to not be going ahead.
Norman Walker, events organiser at Blackburn Lions event, said: “We are well equipped to deal with more people as we have dozens of volunteers on hand and the park can hold more than 30,000.”
The Bee radio show and a number of local bands will provide live entertainment and there will be food and fairground rides for children during the event, which takes place on Saturday, November 3.
The festivities are organised by the Bonfire Management Committee, made up of Blackburn’s Rotary Club, Round Table and Lions groups.
The evening is funded by the Bonfire Management Committee and Blackburn with Darwen Council.
Mr Walker said: “If we didn’t put it on then there would be a lot more people holding their own bonfires in their back gardens, which would mean more strain on A&E, the police, and fire services.”
The council have said they will dismantle and remove any unauthorised bonfires.
The committee chose a number of charities to receive an equal share of the evening’s proceeds.
Mr Walker said: “We choose someone different each time, this year profits will be shared between the Women’s Refuge, Rossendale Mountain Rescue and Child Action North West.”

rowdy youths,
ridiculous food/drink prices, sparkler bans,
expensive entry fees,
crowded spectator areas,
and the cost of getting there and back.
I prefer well organised private parties with sensible adults only lighting the fireworks, excited happy kids and parents watching at a safe distance and yummy food/drink doing the rounds.
