Darwen alley gates bid to cut crime and rubbish

SUPPORT Coun Karimeh Foster, inset, is pleased alley gating is being looked at for the Meadow Street area of Darwen SUPPORT Coun Karimeh Foster, inset, is pleased alley gating is being looked at for the Meadow Street area of Darwen

AN area blighted by anti-social behaviour and rubbish is the latest in Darwen subject to an application to install alley gates.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has applied to have alleys in the area around Meadow Street gated.

If approved by the council planning department, gates would go up behind Woodville Terrace, Portland Street, Maria Street, and Alfred Street.

The application said: “The installation of alley gates is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour within Blackburn and Darwen.

“The layout is uniform across each area, with a two-metre gate suspended between two posts, with infill panels between the post and the adjacent walls, preventing access through, or round, the gate to the alley.”

Whitehall councillor Karimeh Foster said, along with her husband and fellow councillor David, she had concerns about the area.

She said: “I am pleased they are looking at gating the area. It gives people peace of mind.

“We had people contac-ting us saying they were annoyed with people dump- ing rubbish in the alley.

“It was an area that had been of concern to us for a while.”

Coun Foster said people in the area supported the installation of alley gates. She said: “The executive member, Coun Dave Harling, launched a consultation into it after we mentioned it to him.

“We have spoken to people in the area. They are all up for it. Hopefully now, people will look after the alleys.”

Coun Foster said the people of Whitehall had shown a lot of pride in the area.

She said: “We had the Whitehall in Bloom comp-etition recently which was wonderful. People showed they were proud of where they lived and it enhanced the area.

“Hopefully these gates will help us keep this area one of the nicest in the borough.”

Drive around darwen and look up some of the already gated alleyways - what the hell difference has gate-ing made when the home-owners themselves show NO pride in their area.

Disagree with jimpy0. In the St Peter's area of Darwen for example the gates have made a difference. Less crime & certainly less fly-tipping than previously.
I understand that this is also the case in the Newton St / London Terr area too.

Nothing had been said about who foots the bill.
Come off it surly they can't expect the rest of the borough to foot the bill.

After much clamour by residents PENDLE Council installed gates. All went well for a while then the very same people who screamed for the gates were to lazy to open and shut them. For years they were left opened wide. Rubbish was piled up against them. Eventually the council sold them for scrap.

They have actually made a big difference to fly tipping and crime in the areas they have been fitted. Don't knock it when something is being done to improve things

Amazing how the folks of Whitehall will (in all probability) get alley gates, yet those of us who live in less desirable areas of Darwen have been refused. Our particular area has a massive problem with anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping but we don't have a big enough problem to warrant the expense of the gates. Maybe Karimeh Foster could do some research and see which area has real problems instead of those who have slight problems.

Maybe you should ask/find out from the home owners who rent out their property to low lives, why they don't bother with the areas that have a problem. Couldn't have anything to do with them not being from around this way, nor do they care to whom they rent their properties. As long as the rent is paid, why should they bother if things aren't okay for the rest of us.

I agree ! The gates should be placed in those areas with higher crime rates and high anti-social behaviour problems. I doubt very much that this area of Darwen has those problems to a higher degree than some other areas without gates.

The good news is that this is just an application and no decision has been made yet to install gates in this area..
