THE beloved cat of Second World War spy Sigrid Green, who died recently, has been taken in by a Darwen cat rescue centre.
Fourteen-year-old Bessie was the long-time companion of Miss Green, whose funeral was held on Thursday last week.
The cat has gone to live with Maureen Savage, who runs Moggies Cat Rescue, in Stansfield Street.
Miss Green, known as Gusta to her friends, spied on German shipping movements, and the production of heavy water in Norway during the war.
Friend Sara Maguire said: “Bessie has been taken in by Moggies and will not be rehomed.
“I knew Gusta didn’t want the cat to be put down, so I said I would get it a home.
“She thought the world of the cat, so this is what she would have wanted.”
Miss Green died on Friday, October 12, at Highfield House residential home, aged 91.
