A LANDMARK former mill owner’s mansion in Pendle could be converted into a prestige spa and boutique hotel with a Moroccan spa.

Plans have been unveiled by Dr Zia Ud-Din to transform Bank House, in Albert Road, Colne, the former headquarters of Pendle Leisure Trust.

Under the scheme, the later annexe to the 1870s building, would be demolished and replaced with a three-storey accommodation block.

The offer at the spa would include a Hammam, or Moroccan spa, swimming pool, treatment rooms, laser surgery and cosmetic surgery clinics, hair-dressing salon and nail bar, with overnight rooms in the rear.

Planning agent Umar Farque has told planners that the loss of the annexe would not be a great loss to the neighbourhood.

He said: “It is unattractive and does not sit comfortably with the main building and at best could be described as an eyesore.

“We consider this to be a great opportunity to remove an unsightly extension and enhance the site.”

The building was used as offices and a ticket outlet by the leisure trust before the leisure trust relocated to Colne Town Hall three years ago.

Dr Ud-Din, who is based in Brierfield, has recently acquired Bank House, and is pursuing the venture under his company, Zeiss Medical Ltd.

Mr Farque added: “This is a unique opportunity for Colne to have an iconic development that will bring prosperity to the town and create jobs for the local community.”

Bank House was originally constructed for the local mill owner Richard Shaw.

Town councillor Carlo Lionti, who runs the nearby Carlo’s Restaurant in Albert Road, said: “I’ve had a look at the plans and they appear to be very attractive. This should bring investment to the area.”
